The Deck’s Story

Several years ago, I cried to a friend while on my way to work that I just wanted to be like everyone else.

I never quite felt like I fit in, and it seemed (to me) that others made and kept friends, relationships, and jobs so much easier. At that point in my life I felt it was exhausting to keep trying so hard to fit in and be like everyone around me. I felt like a failure that I couldn’t find my footing.

She responded by saying, “Katherine, it is because you’re a neon color. Most people are vanilla or chocolate and everyone loves those favors, and that is great and okay. You however will be the right flavor for the right people.”

That statement stuck with me and honestly was the first time I can consciously remember anyone, including myself, giving me
full permission to be me without muting myself down or clipping my wings.
